Liz Weston on… being 1 of the 25 Most Influential People in the Cambridge Business Community

Did you hear? I’m one of the Ones to Watch – 1 of the 25 Most Influential People in the Cambridge Business Community. I’m very flattered by this, and didn’t even know I’d been entered, let alone chosen, until this afternoon!

I’ll be at a reception at the Doubletree in the city on September 11 where the top three will be named. I very much doubt I’ll be one of them but it’s great news that a woman, and a young one at that, has been chosen for this. That it’s me, is an added bonus!

Just to clarify though, as you always need to when featured in the blessed media, my working in a hospital and cleaning, and the banana packing job were summer jobs when I was 18! Those quotes were provided as part of an interview I gave to the Cambridge Evening News months ago. It sounds like I was doing it last week!!! And I’d like to re assure my clients that I’m not moonlighting by packing banana’s at the weekends ;)

In all seriousness though, I’m really pleased with this. It shows that being persistent,
a positive networker – someone who introduces people to each other and shares their address book readily and looks for opportunities to “pay it forward” is a good thing.

What are you doing to make yourself influential and useful to people in your business community?

  • Carrie Costen

Fantastic woman. caring and professional. Carrie Costen- Midwife

    • Liz Weston

Thank you Carrie – your writing as a Midwife is really important to me, as that’s where this all started – with the New Baby Guides :)

Well done, Liz. It’s so important to be an active networker locally, both to help foster development of the local business community, but also to have people you can rely on nearby that understand the challenges that small business owners go through. I am not sure that my business,, would have come this far without the support I have got through local networking. In addition, you can find you develop your skills in ways you didn’t imagine helping out others as well! Here is to hoping you do make the final three :-)

Thank you Helen, for taking time to comment on here. Looking forward to seeing more of your blogs as Kiddy Charts grows!

  • Clare

Wow – well done Liz.  Your support and networking has been invaluable in helping us to launch in such an exciting way.  Great working with you and fingers crossed you make the top 3.

Cheers Clare! Thank you for taking time to comment. I feel like we should be having conference calls in some sort of Challenge Anneka set up at the moment, because you’ve grown so quickly in just three months!

  • Vicki Scott

Great news Liz! But I’m not surprised-I’ve only been on your radar a short time but I’ve certainly noticed you have an infectious enthusiasm to connect people, and a generosity which will help drive all our businesses on. I’m looking forward to working with you more in the future! Fingers crossed for September!

    • Liz Weston aka @TheLizWeston

Thank you Vicki. I’m grateful for your comments – being Midwives, I know you’ve seen it all, got the t-shirt and all that stuff, so it’s really important to me to make sure that I’m still working with Midwives and the NHS to support them whenever I can.

For me being influential is about being approachable, providing thought out advice (often for free with a pay it forward attitude) and for my business supporting local. It has worked for us so far and goes to show that if you are confident with what you put in a lot with come to you :)
